T minus 1 day
Today, I brought the car to Rolling Bay Automotive for the 30k maintenance, and to double and triple check that "Sally the Subaru" was ready for the cross-country adventure. Willis came with me to the auto shop while Richie waited at home for Brainerd's Carpet Cleaning. We thought the carpet cleaning would take about 3 or 4 hours, but it actually only took 45 minutes to clean all 5 carpeted rooms in the condo! I know - we couldn't believe it either!
I dropped off the car at the auto shop, and Willis and I walked the 3 miles back home. It was a beautiful morning! It had snowed the night before, and the schools were delayed 2 hours, so there was little traffic.
We spent the rest of the day organizing our gear. We already knew everything fits in the car because we did a "trial packing" on Sunday.

We got the car back, and Richie replaced the windshield wipers while I vacuumed.
We've divided it up into the following:
Kitchen
Bath
Electronics
Bikes
Exercise equipment
Camping/backpacking
Clothes
Food
And we can't forget the cute little "hot pot" mits!
Whew - everything fits!
We measured the car with the bikes on top, and it comes to 9 feet 2 inches tall. We put a little sticky note on the rearview mirror to remind us that the bikes are on the roof.
Our neighbor, "Mama Blanche," made us a home-cooked dinner of yummy salmon, lentils and rice, and green beans. Once again, good food, good conversation, and good wine - we'll miss "Mama Blanche" terribly!
