Bear Butte State Park

We spent the day in Sturgis, South Dakota... Home of the World-Famous Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. The town is full of bars - all claiming to be "the biggest motorcycle bar in the world." They even have "free bike parking" signs in every alley.

The 69th rally was held about a month ago on August 3-9, so we missed the excitement. Luckily, we were able to find a quiet coffee house on the main street called Olde Worlde Cafe & Bookery. (Yes, each word ends with an "e.") Books and coffee... we were in heaven.

After a 6-hour day at the coffee shop (whew!), we arrived at the very windy Bear Butte State Park. It was comical putting up the tent, but we managed by laughing the whole time.

A sign in the pit-toilet telling visitors to put the seat down.
Trust us - we've used enough of these this year to know that it makes a difference!

After a protected dinner behind the car, we went for a walk. The park is huge, but the campground is off the highway down a gravel road. It is nice and quiet, except for the moo-cows across the street.

We will come back to Bear Butte State Park in a few days. We like the $8/night price tag more than the $80/night for a hotel. Richie also discovered we can climb Bear Butte Mountain - 1,000 foot elevation gain in 2-miles. The mountain's name comes from its shape - a sleeping bear. We are looking forward to the hike.

Bear Butte is just a few miles from Deadwood - where the starting (or ending) trailhead to the Mickelson Trail is located. We'll be biking the trail through the Black Hills in about a week (about 220 miles total). First, we want to see Mt. Rushmore, the Crazy Horse Monument, and Custer State Park.
