Hawai'i Preparations
When I shared our Hawai'i excursion with family and friends, my Dad gave us some good advice: "Make sure your credit cards are cleared. Hawaii was costly when your Mom and I went in the early 70's."
So now our goal is to do this trip as cheaply as possible and still have a great time.
The most expenisve item for this trip was obviously the airline tickets. We were able to find a relatively good deal through Hawaiian Airlines.
The second most expensive item for the trip was transportation around the island of O'ahu. We were able to rent 2 mopeds for the week for less than it would cost us to rent a car. We also have 2 sets of sturdy walking legs that will come in handy!
We hope to camp most nights while on the island, but we are not 100% certain how the camping permits work or if there will be space available. We have 3 nights scheduled at a hostel just north of Waikiki, and hope to get some advice from the locals there.
We'll pick up food along the route. I'm sure it will be a bit costly, but we look forward to tasting the local produce and menus (well not literally tasting the menus).
We are also traveling very, very lightly, so we don't have to pay to check baggage. So, our packing list includes:
2 small CamelBak bags
tent
2 bed rolls
2 sleeping bag inserts
1 change of clothes
swimsuits
sunscreen and basic toiletries
the cell phone
ink pen and notepad
the camera, of course!
This should be fun!
